As Frankie and I have gone really off topic with our childhood memories ,I thought it would be nice to hear how children and teenagers managed to while away the loong summer holidays in this area....without computers ,playstations and the like.
We apparently come from a generation of Risk Takers when the almighty PC and Health and Safety Brigade were absent.
But was it as good as we remember or do we just selectively choose to forget the bad times.
What was it like being young in Harwich ,Clacton ,Walton and surrounding areas?.
I think I may have put this on the wrong bit so I sincerely apologise .

with the risks i used to take it was that if i hurt myself it was my own fault,no blaming anyone else well apart from rayleigh who didnt make my bike properly Rolling Eyes
havent we as a society brought this upon ourselves with our blame culture?
i would have to say there was more good than bad times growing up in clacton, everyone must remember the pram race during carnival week, starting at the coach and horses and stopping at every pub on the way into town,i remember thinking when i grow up i want to do that and what do they do, as soon as im old enough they stop doing it Evil or Very Mad

frankie... home from work having a nice cup of tea.

Student Rag Week was fun.
I recall the pram race ,grown men in nappies falling all over the place.Clacton Football ground (where Morrisons is now ) was the venue for the Donkey Derby ,I swear it was the same blokes that had been in the pram race.
Farmer Brown at Coppins Hall Farm ,he was a Christian Man ,super ,lovely most unselfish and dedicated man to children .He used to let us build straw houses out of the bales of straw so long as we didn't upset his cows .Bless him.Started Sunshine corner in the hall that they've just smashed down in Coppins Road.Every summer he would pay for us kids to go camping in Suffolk ....ooooooh the worms used to wriggle under the groundsheets at night.
Every summer he would have a Circus tent put up at Rush Green (pre estate )and encourage us to go and learn about Christianity. We would get stickers to collect and exchange at the end of the holiday. We were set a challenge to get a book ,mine was to learn all the books of the New Testament (I can still remember them ,but forget my grandchildrens names Embarassed )

perhaps we should start a campaign to get the pram race reinstated, you and i lin could have our own team, you can do the pushing and i'll do the drinking Laughing
i remember the circus on vista rec and helping put up the big top and earning myself £2 also getting a free ticket.
the wrestling at the town hall every thursday night brings back memories,i used to go with one of my aunts,i used to stand by the changing rooms trying to get their autographs, they were famous because they had been on the telly! now anyone can get on the telly, even ive been on Embarassed
the carnival with the military bands and the olympic gold medalists from brightlingsea having their boat towed around town in 1976,that was when the carnival was held midweek in the afternoon.
does anyone remember the westcliffe nightclub,i think it was called that,my brother and sister used to go there every week. zzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Anyone else for the Pram Race ????,no chance that you will beat Fankie and me as he is doing the drinking and I will be pushing (many ,many years of training pushing wheelchairs and prams)plus I will be the only sober one there so you will have to follow me as you lot will be too drunk to read the map Laughing
Re Westcliff nightclub ,bamboo walls ,lying about your age to get in ,yup I remember that and the 101 disco on the seafront ,beach parties up at Holland Haven .Town Hall Discos and disco's at the newly built scout hall in Blenhiem Road.To my embarrassment I was also a sea cadet until I discovered the Westcliff.
One of my furthest back memories was standing at my bedroom window when we lived in St Johns Road and watching the Mods and Rockers coming into town (I was very ,very young ,honest Embarassed ) I think ,but it could be my memory playing tricks ,there was a song on the radio at the time called Love Ya Illiya (something to do with The Man from Uncle)

Me thinks the only way for me to be able to walk, let alone push royalty round our parrish, would be an electric powered pram, with me wearing my grandaughters best heelies on....lol....

Now ivan sits, brain ticking over, ummm, now then, if we put an electric motor driving the rear wheels, place the batteries low under the bottom of the pram, steer the front wheels by the Duchesses feet, and the pushers holding the "twist an go" throttle.....ummmm................lol...... Wink

No ....me thinks you should have had a divi card then you would have still got your points...... Wink
Ivan we could always put a footboard on the back of scootie/pram design...then I could stand on the backboard and can steer with one hand leaving my spare hand for regally waving and the passenger /old soak could drink to his hearts content....
Perhaps Ivan and Frankie could do the pram push and Princess Essexgurl attended by Duchess Lin could cut the ribbon at the Start.....just a thought...... Rolling Eyes

I didn't do the housework as I crackered myself mowing the garden ,avoiding the frogs (least ,I didn't hear any strange clunking noises like before).
By the way ,my Grandson does not believe me that we are doing the pram race.....he reckons we are all to old and crusty and should consider borrowing scooters from Clacton Shop Mobility Rolling Eyes Wink`at this rate we will be knocking back the Sanatogen Wine and Guiness

Just read in the paper what events there will be in the Carnival and sorry to say there is no pram race this year. Now I have to put the 1980's lycra dress back in its box in the loft.
Blast ,I was looking forward to seeing Frankie and Ivan dressed up in bonnets and nappies.Though I think they should still wear the apparel mentioned and enter the Donkey Derby Laughing I'd love to see them trying to ride a donkey whilst drinking a pint of best.
Mind I am glad that I have not got to squeeze my plates into those white stillettos........................... Wink

lin, your not all fur coat and......... well you know the saying!!
anymore crisps?++++++++++++++++++++++++++
And old Ivan thought that was an undiestatement......ha..ha..ha....
OK then, i suppose you could, in theory get me in an acre or 2 of white toweling and make it look like a nappy, babies bonnets can be replaced with BIG frilly sun hats.......................
drinking a pint of best reminds me of the beer and bannana race on scoots in the Mersea Island scooter rally each August bank holiday..
In the fenced of arena, some of the boys and girls play "strange" games usually on scooters, so falling off is the norm....
More so after the 12 pints and twelve bannanas one after the other whilst riding around the arena...........
Only for the foolhardy..(or plain funny)....
So, your figure revealing, multi shimering, lovley hugging dress is not being seen this year then our LIN.......shame..............

Oh well, poor old google eyed Ivan..(and Franky..) will just have to sit and eat the crisps then..(hope that was not connected to the fur coat joke..?..?..).......ha..ha..ha..

I`m going before Lin gets all Misswhiplash on me........GRRRRRR....lol.

Lin I think it would be worth sorting out a charity pram race in clacton without the carnival as i could do with the laugh frankie and ivan in diamontie thongs!!! and you in your lycra dress good for a laugh.
