This morning I noticed a fw people wandering around wearing clothing with RSPB logos. I assumed that someone had lost a budgie and they were on the case.
But then at dinner time the doorbell rang.
I won't detail the conversation but the man in the RSPB greatcoat holding a picture of a bird asked if I was worried about the decline in birds locally and told me that most of my neighbours had undertaken to donate a "small" monthly amount to help remedy the situation. My Chugger alarm went off. They have moved from the High Street to the side street
He could not have been more sociable, smiley and pleasant. Then I told him that we donate to 3 carefully selected charities by Diret Debit each month and he just turned on his foot and walked down the path without a word of goodbye.
I googled "RSPB" and "chugger" on the internet and apparently the RSPB is at the forefront of this activity and the company they employ are so agressive that they are alienating existing members.
If you sign a DD for one of these charity muggers (£10 a month is their target), the first year's payments go to the agency before the charity sees a single penny.
If the idea of a particular charity seems good to you, set up your own payment to them. If you sign up on the doorstep they will receive much less than you pay out.
If you want to get rid of them, tell them that you are already a member, or that you do not have a bank account They will soon go and annoy your neighbours.
I am however fond of Turkey at Easter and Christmas.
For more info google "RSPB chuggers"

Strange you should mention that Vicar.
Whilst waiting for the Grandson to finish school yesterday ,I saw the above mentioned people and wondered what they were up to.
I get really annoyed by this sort of behaviour. If someone wants to donate ,then they would have done so off their own back.In my mind this is no better than begging.
In the past two months I have been inundated with phone calls from various charities begging on the phone. For a while I wondered how they got my number as we are ex directory. Then the penny dropped. We recently changed our phone calls to a package offer from a well known provider (not BT) and this is when it all started. Now ,my BT account had the wrong initial for me (tried to get it corrected but gave up in the end),the charities are using this initial ,so ,the question is ...have BT given my details to all and sundry ?.
I just say "Send me the paperwork and I may consider it".
Thanks for filling us in on whats going on. |

These folk canvassing 'on behalf' of the RSPB were around my area about the time that there was a nationwide Count The Birds In Your Garden run by the RSPB. (sorry, I can't remember when that was)
Because they came late evening and it was dark I didn't answer my door but I gather from neighbours that the chap was quite agressive when they told him they weren't interested.
Seems that these folk use specific events to do their begging.......... |

The RSPB seems to have lost it's way, at the public inquiry into the Bathside Bay application by HPUK they were very strong at the beginning but literally went to pieces under cross questioning by the TDC barrister, looking back, not sure if it was not all a put up job.
Begging on doorsteps using crooked techniques? |

RSPB let themselves down in my view when they recently had to cull birds on one of their reserves.
I do understand that culls may be necessary from time to time but they chose to do this one by selling licences to hunters allowing them to shoot a specific number of birds.
I can't reconcile "Protection" of birds with encouraging people who kill animals for sheer pleasure to come and enjoy themselves on a nature reserve.
That would be as silly as having Prince Phillip as president of the WWF. Wouldn't it? _________________ Every day Gordon Brown receives, in the post, two packages containing dog's excrement. I wonder who's sending the other one. |

Details are here.
http://myreader.co.uk/msg/140451880.aspx
I understand the cormorant cull was demanded by anglers and is fiercely opposed by RSPB.
While looking for the above url I discovered that it is RSPB policy to completely eradicate every Ruddy Duck (that's their name) in the UK as their presence is threatening native species.
Perhaps they should be renamed Royal Society for the Protection of some birds but not all of them. _________________ Every day Gordon Brown receives, in the post, two packages containing dog's excrement. I wonder who's sending the other one. |

The blogger who made the point that the RSPB collect money for saving birds not allowing them to be shot has a strong issue.
Transparency would seem to dictate that when a donor contributes he should be in possession of all the facts before he coughs up. Trouble is the RSPB must feel that they would not raise much money if it became known that they are being pragmatic (very political, economical with the truth etc. and possible liars)rather than idealistic. |
