What is baffling is why our councilors need help to see we have some wonderful architecture.
Maybe thats why so much has been given the go ahead to be demolished, just look at Colchester for instance, a gem ruined.
What is left of old Harwich, if it had been within the gift of our council leaders would have gone the same way when one sees how they performed over the Bathside Bay appeal by HPUK.
I don't know what the authorities in Boscombe, near Bournemouth have spent their £11millions on lets hope it has conserved the good.
what do you think of Cllr Mayzes ideas of a historic trail from WW2 along our coastline.
I`m on the fence with this one.
Thinking about defence of our coasts, our Martello Towers now 200 years old, have survived very well,
with our jaywick one celebrating its birthday earlier this year.
I'm not sure about celebrating WW2 anymore than any other war, after all what could be more negative, although I understand "Lest we forget".
But Walton Backwaters and Arthur Ransom of Swallows and Amazons fame type interest picked up and remodeled, yes please.
However grumpy old men should not be the arbiters of such, if it gets people out walking at least they will be exposed to what inspired Arthur Ransome et al.
Thanks Amenity.
as you say, any trail be it a nature or factfinding rememberance one does indeed get people out to view the surrounding areas as they walk.
I went to the WW2 Exhibition at St James recently and ..........................WON a prize in the raffle ........ . Now that's a first. Never usually win nothing.
It's a beautiful book published by the VHG all about the WW2 defences along coast. Fantastic read. I tink this is what young Stephen is on about. Unfortunately not many are now left.
Still ,I do feel he has a point about looking after what is left ,although I would never want war glorified ,it did happen ,and although we sometimes don't seem to have learnt from it ,perhaps we should understand what happened ,for the sake of the next generation.
I will go on one of Stephens walks............ as long as he keeps on a lead.
We as a family, have been and visted some various WW2 buildings in the past,
with there ownership local councils pushing them well for the tourists business in the county`s they remain in,
so its a yes then for our own TDC backed heritage trail.
from memory,
the "secret" nucler bunker near Brentwood,
also the now closed one in mistley,
although not WW2, still a very good visit.
the Northe Fort, Weymouth.
the Redoubt, Harwich.
We must not forget the part our Martello Towers played either during WW2.
One day i will go and find the forifications on the Harwich areas.
Just a thought, at most historic car rally`s,
there is always a showing of WW2 vehicles, so why not ask the owners to be included,
where possible, in some moving memoriabilia on peak tourists days.
