A BRIGHT and happy time was spent on Whit Monday by a detachment of machine gunners who held a held a sports meeting in a field at Little Clacton kindly leant for the the occasion by Mr Spooner.
The morning was occupied with a programme of 22 events , all being keenly contested.the unusual feat of winning both the high jump and the the long jump was accomplished by Prvt. Broodhurst , who cleared 4ft 6in and 12ft 2in respectively.
In the afternoon a cricket match between Lieut Blunt's team and Sergt. Huggett's Xl was played, the game ending in a draw. The sergeant's team batted first and declared with three wickets down for 51 , the lieutenant scoring 30 for no wicket. A very fine concert and programme of which was contributed by members of the detachment and and one or two lady friends, was held in the evening , and during an interval the prizes won in the sports contests were distributed by Miss Bullman of Clacton-on-Sea.
So, a jolly time was had by all as it seems.
This was 90 years ago though.... |
