ANYONE SEEN A NEW BEAUTIFUL BUILDING IN THE AREA LATELY????After reading the posts about the current fashion for cramming as much housing on one site as possible,I thought it may be nice if we all kept our eyes open for any new build that is beautiful.
You know the sort ,Garden ,in keeping with the area and some thought put into it.
I have been wracking my brains but can't come up with anything.
All I have come up with are flats and bungalows or mini estates that will eventually be swamped by building even more nearby............"Little boxes ,little boxes made of ticky tacky little boxes ,little boxes and they all look just the same......"(with apologies to Val Doonagan)

Taken from a Gazette article last week...
EIGHT buildings have been short-listed in the battle to be named the best in Tendring.
Nominations have come in from across the district and include a good mix of developments including commercial, educational ones, retail and residential.
Organisers of the award say there is also a good balance between renovation and new build as well as rural and urban schemes.
Judges will get together on March 22 to make a final decision.
The whole aim of the award, which is being made for the first time, is to encourage excellence in the built environment, rather than schemes which merely meet the planning criteria.
Iris Johnson, portfolio holder for planning at Tendring Council, which is behind the award, said she had been very encouraged by the response to this new initiative.
She said: “People really seem to have been excited by this and have put forward those buildings which they believe to be worthy winners.
“It is now all in the hands of the judges to decide who gets this prestigious accolade.
“In the longer term I am very hopeful that by making an award of this kind it will stimulate better building projects right across Tendring.”
The eight short-listed buildings are:
Vista Cottage, Kirby-le-Soken
Clifton Court, Walton
Trinity House Offices, Harwich
Martello Tower, Jaywick
Bishops Park College, Clacton
103 Main Road, Dovercourt
The Exchange, Manningtree
Maltings Park, Manningtree
The successful design will receive a plaque to be placed on the building to mark the honour.
They will also be eligible to go forward to represent the district in the Regional Planning Achievement Award Scheme.
All those short-listed lie within the Tendring district boundary and were approved by the local planning authority over the past five years.
The presentation is due to be made at the end of March.

If there was an award for the worst building in the District, I'm pretty sure that the Royal Hotel in Marine Parade would top the list. Yet again the TDC approach seems to be, If we ignore it, maybe it will go away. Well, sorry boys its still there. What was once the Flagship Building of Clacton Seafront has by negelct and probably intent allowed to become as Price Charles would have said a 'monstrous carbuncle'.
It now blights the whole of that area, I mean what a welcome to unsuspecting visitors.
I find it hard to believe that with all the powers that Local Authorities have these days to come and tell you what you can and can't do with a private residence, they could'nt have at least forced the owner into maintaining and perhaps decorating the Facade.

Have to agree with you Dave.So many of our really super buildings are just rotting away .It's not as if the council are unaware of them as they all are situated in prime locations. The Pavillion ,The Royal and the cafe on the seafront ect .
There was some architecture in the area but it's all being bull-dozed for more flats .....maybe that is the plan ,allow them to become dangerous then grab them and sell off at an extortionate rate for.......you guessed it,MORE flats!!!
Over the past 18 months I have begun a project to photograph all the buildings over 110 years old as they seem to be disappearing rapidly.Have been all over Great Clacton and Old Road getting very strange looks .......do you think ,they think I am a peeping Tom????

I may be a bit of a sceptic but, if this award was instigated by TDC then I would want to know who actually nominated the buildings that have made the short list.
I am afraid that where our TDC cabinet have any input into a scheme I don't trust the outcome, and that is purely based on what they are allowing to happen within the district.

I'm with pepsi on this one.
Why don't they offer an award for the best building design irrespective of age then we could take part but would these new carbuncles get anywhere?
They TDC will say what a supreme level of design we have in Tendring after ruling out older design.
Theres a lovely old building opposite (near the Coop) the end of Fronks Road Dovercourt soon to be demolished I'm afraid.

This is becomming a good game to play in the car with the children.I just tell them to keep their eyes out for any good or bad buildings.....keeps them quiet for ages.
Our favourite Bad one this week has to be the eyesore on the corner of Berkley Road and Wellesley Road opposite Olivers Road ,believe it or not ,someone actually lives in it ,along with the hundreds of pigeons that fly freely in and out of the gaping holes in the roof.Sad really ,as my Nan and Grandad lived there during and just after the war .
Have to agree with Amenity and Pepsie ,the award should be given irrespective of age .
Hillside House is a lovely old building ,I have always covetted it with it's turret.(By the way,it's the one that can be seen at the back of Valley Road and Burrs Road).
