Christmas lightsHas almost passed its sellby date. But did we ever find out whether they saved money. Or was it the Health & Safety that stopped them putting lights up? And if they did save money will we see any benefit?
I wonder if carol singers and musicians playing carols in the street will be chopped too? The new licencing Act means the council should charge £20 for any temporary event. So probably that will knock it on the head?

I thought it was a health and safety issue that in turn would make the whole putting lights up expensive.
Though they can't be that worried as I did notice that the wires that they used last year are still there and in some cases hanging down.
Isnt there a christmas fayre type event at Harwich Town train station when they do the santa train.

Not sure about the Santa train. Haven't read about it. But then I don't get the paper!
It sounds like one of the events covered by the new legislation though. It'll be interesting to see what Christmas is like with the temporary events licences.
Won't be much fiun for my friend who works on Stena fast cat though. He's been given notice as they're stopping that service on Jan 8th. I think it is 98th. definite date in January anyway.
I suppose this should be a new topic?

Just checked the evening gazette site for info on the santa train - here's the story.
Harwich will have a merry Christmas after all!
The town was dealt a blow when the annual Christmas lights celebration was cancelled due to health and safety complications.
Now the town's tourist information centre has come to the rescue by organising a Christmas market and open-air carol service.
The event will be run in conjunction with the regular Santa trains, which are expected to attract hundreds of visitors to Harwich on December 17.
Tickets for the Santa trains, which take about 750 people from Harwich to Manningtree and back again, go on sale from Monday. They cost £4 for adults and £1 for children, including a present from Father Christmas.
At the same time as the trains, a Christmas market, featuring a range of stalls, will be held outside Harwich railway station.

I'm sorry about your friend losing his job - I guess the time of year really doesnt help either.
If you dont want to buy the paper every day just to see if there is anything good in it you can read it online and decide if you want to buy it then. Some of the stories are more in depth in the paper than online but at least you can see if its worth buying it.

Thanks for all the info. Sounds nice but the train tickets are expensive.

It is only £20 for a licence which is OK for an event, but a bit much for carol singers!!
Yes I am sorry for him losing hsi job too. Also sorry to eb lsoing the ferry service. I suppose it is relocating to Yarmouth. They got permission for a fast cat to Amsterdam didn't they?
Much better route for tourists than Harwich to The Hook.
It won't sound like many jobs lost here in the stats though. My friend is Dutch. He lives in Harwich but he is paid by the Dutch part of the company so redundancies etc come under Dutch law. That means the stats will all be for Dutch jobs lost not UK ones!!

Well apparently the Harwich Traders weren't amused that HTC didnt come forward and offer some help....in fact Les Double was quoted as saying that they didnt know. So of course this begs the question why didnt the cllr who is on the Harwich Traders as a liason say anything, I believe its Lawrie Payne.
