A few years ago we spent a fine week in Ilfracombe. It's a pleasant enough town for a holiday but the seafront has been blighted by the most bizarre looking buildings whose planning approval defies belief.
.

However, and eventually getting to my point, the second most memorable thing about our stay was that every evening of the week, the council had arranged for some sort of free entertainment on the seafront e.g. pipe bands, choirs, dancers etc. and every evening the area was packed with onlookers thoroughly enjoying themselves.
The other week we had the day of music on Clacton which was well attended and today, in White Elephant Square (where the fountain used to be) there was a group of buskers playing pan-pipe music and attracting a crowd of perhaps 200 people.
I wouldn't expect the town to lay on an event every night of the week, we are a day-tripper town, but surely during the holiday season it is not beyond the wit of the powers that be to provide some entertainment at weekends in the "showpiece" town centre to give the visitors something positive to remember about their trip to Clacton

Most brilliant idea Vicar.
You are truley blessed with such inspirational ideas ,let's hope one of the councillors we know read this site will pinch your idea and moot it to the All Powerful Leisure and Tourism God .(Who doubles as rat catcher extrordinairre at the weekends) .
Still think White Elephant Square should have Stocks put there at the weekends too though .

Nice Litter Pick too. Wink

" the seafront has been blighted by the most bizarre looking buildings"

I was almost shocked today upon reading your post vicar complete with your picture, you see i never had my glasses on, and the quick glance that i had of your two pointy things, i thought was of early madona laying down, and pointing upwards if you see what i mean.
As this set my heart pounding i reached for my glasses only to be gently let down as the words flowed onto my screen about you getting to your point also....

As i read through your descriptions of fun evenings by the sea, my mind (little that i have left) let my thoughts wander also to include possably to your ideas.
Our once great Town center now lacking its freshening alternative lifestyles experiance of pre watersports spouts.
What we need now is for the forthcoming new bus experience of buzzing the tourists around our version of Paris`s Perrifenique (ok, ring road) is to get the buskers (musical eventers) actually on the busses playing to the lost tourists by being a captive audiance while touring Tendring between our new out of Town park and ride base and grand central Clacton...

Wonderful i hear cried.
Problems solved.

Thats all i need i cried,
12 miles return trip to the park and ride and back to beiruit central, 6 miles of serenading by basking buskers to and from grand central and Clacton great, and a carbon footprint big enough to walk to the man in the moon and back....

Problems solved the EASYE way........pass the magic mushrooms, it`ll look good then.......hhmmmmmmmmmm

Vicar is absolutely right and has shone a searchlight on our motley crew of organisers at TDC holding their head in their hands baying "What shall we do"?

Clacton used to have a Bandstand ,open air concerts at the weekend .
Perhaps it's time to do something along the same lines (of course, bringing it up to date and catering for various tastes ) .Vicar has a very good point here.
I am sure there is a lot of unknown talent around that could be showcased in White Elephant Square ,
What TDC should do is put a modern take of a Bandstand on WES and have the fountains actually working, illuminations ,seats ,shut off Pier Avenue(Along the amusement bit )on weekend evenings  and have some fun.

Think of all those bands made up of young people desperate for somewhere to make their debut, young singers that are really great, Harwich, Dovercourt has quite a few so must Clacton and its environs.  Come on TDC a small prize once a week to start on Friday or Saturday night.

Clacton cool or un-cool.
Ok all of you postees do have very valid points raised.

To see the extent of just how Clacton hates itself at the moment, Saturday before last was its premier night, carnival night...
rain or no rain, its long route went straight from point a to point b.

It used to go through town center, entertaining those who never knew, or perhaps forgot, or perhaps those still at work, during carnival proccession time, being its longer carnival route.

Yesterday, Waltons carnival route while being shorter, wound its way through its town center, going back on its route partially to arrive at Bath house Meadows from its Naze car park starting point.
1,000`s were not only out, sun or not, were actively running up to put money into collection buckets on the moving floats.

Dear old Clacton has tried and as yet failed, to promote its self as a "good place to shop"

Dirty pavements, white elephant fountains, and it being equall third in this countries worst deprivation figuers that our central government has shown, still do it no favors.

It has had spent on it hundreds of £thousends of OUR (Golf Greens) total 4 year spend for regeneration,
and still not got it right.

Who funded the busking event, who paid (£1,000`s ) Dream 100 Radio to be at the event...hhmmmm...let me guess now...

If you look at what planners have put down for there "vision" of Clactons Town Center and its outlying areas, its trying to recreate a mini lakeside shopping experiance, with a covered mall starting at or very near a white elephant...

Lets just hope a musical makover makes more than just music, but makes the hard pressed shop owners more happy, and its shopping customers more so.

A few days ago, while enjoying our grand daughters visit for the week, we went to its near pier childrens amusements area.
crazy golf, trampolines, motorised rides and water boats hide T D C`s (although its online website still displys:-   ("The page cannot be found" )planning enforcement departments hidious structure and bandstand area the once supreeme venue for all things musical and jolly, its ampitheatre Pavilian thingy.
Its once elaborate steel railing now so badly rusted as to be almost non existant.
the inside open air areas deplapidated beyond repair.

On the other side of the road, it more viable commercial properties ARE being either knocked down and replaced, or having major structual remediational works carried out, with the once renouned den of darkness and despair (unlike its name) the Lighthouse, having trial groundworks being dug in antisipation for the new "landmark" (why is everything landmark) building that may take place to replace the old outdated lighthouse pubic house (spelled correctly in this case)

Question;

what or how long are locals expected to wait to see what happens to the massive disenchantment that is now the Clacton Pavillion....
