Dumped.

Has anybody wathed any of the Channel 4 show? If you haven't:

Eleven people were put on a dump near Sutton to live for three weeks. It was extremely enlightening as they had tasks to make a shelter from the rubbish, a solar powered shower, art and even a sauna was built by a sauna loving girl. It really was an eye opener.

I've always been quite concious of what we're doing to the Earth but that show put it more firmly into my mind. 2000 mobile phones go in the bin every half an hour in the UK. Scary thought considering tha they can be recycled or given to charity. A third of our waste (at least, if not more) can be recycled, sold as scrap or just reused.

I've already started plans to see if I can make a solar powered water heater, a sauna and also an electricity generator already as a small self-experiment Smile And when I pass my driving test I'll start recycling as Waterglade haven't got their recycling bins anymore I think?

Where are there recycling bins? The dump is always a good place to pick things up, I know that much!

There are re cycling bins at Fiveways Oxford Road ,they take ...milk cartons ,Glass ,paper (newspaper and magazines),can and clothes.

I must admit I have not seen the programme although I have read a bit about it in the papers.

All for a massive increase in recycling ,I now recycle more than I put in the black bags.

I do have re usable bags for shopping ,though I am the world best 'forgetter' and my 10 year old usually has to do a mad dash to the car to get them when i finally remember that i left them in the car (this normally occurs when I reach the check out !). Rolling Eyes

Two dogs eat all the food left overs (which accounts for their ever expanding waistlines) ,but I cannot get them to eat the vegetable scraps ....should I invest in a rabbit or chickens Question .

Three enormous compost heaps which need to be turned but a colony of slow worms have set up residence .

And ,Yes ,I am one of those annoying people who refuse to put my vegetables in plastic bags and have them loose all over the till ,I'm gonna wash them so why do I need plastic bags ????.

Good on you Nikadi ,we are an extremly wasteful society ,let us know how you get on with your projects ,
Also for anyone who finds they have run out of room in those silly little green boxes ,you can get extra ones from the little shop next door to the pet shop in Jackson road.

Some good points raised girls..
I benefit from 2 russells that eat most left over vegetable stuff....
they both eat some of potato peelings, go mad for cucumber peelings, as with carrots / peelings, apples, pears aswell...
they will eat mashed potato, but not too many baked ones..
they love pasta, so if we cook spag - boll, all the skimmed of fat i save, and "sin" and "snoop" get it poured over some pasta when its cooled down.....
now before you ask about "sin" and "snoop" its the shortened names for my dogs..
my dogs are well fed, but they do get vegetables of sorts....
they also go mad for crisps and cheese, but then so does the cat....(the cat thinks its a dog sometimes when we all go for a walk).....

So in our madhouse, whats normal, whats not.........lol......(says the man who thinks he`s captain invinceable---taa-daahhhh).....ssshhhhhh....lol....

Me & the bf have decided to try solar powered lights first, and we're working on them already, I'll drag him into plans tomorrow, along with plans for our purely vegetarian colourful party to celebrate summer in the middle of winter =D Which is why we'll be building a sauna :p

We don't even get a recycling truck come down Ellis Road! however those boxes will be handy when I do drive :/ do they sell them or give them out? I know exactly where you're talking about but that shop is always changing as the owners never stay long, I remember about ten owners having it at different points in the past twelve years O_O

I recycled for the first time today, haha. A years worth of Pick Me Up in the magazine bin ouside St Claire's Nursery and the church =D

Perhaps we should start a recycling board on here....you know the sort of thing ,if you have something that could be of use to someone else .

This year I grew so many plants ,tomato ,cucumber ,flowers ect ,that I didn't have room for them all ....ended up digging my neighbours much neglected vegggie plot so I could put them there, gave loads away and still had too many (must have green fingers ).

We all throw away things that can be recycled ,scratched C.D's make a great deterrent o birds on the veg patch ,perhaps the local allotmenteers could use them (if they put a box outside the allotments we could put them there ),shall look into that one .After all, these things do not rot down.
We all get new stuff ,not because the old has had it ,no ,we just change things for the fashion of it. I know that the Furniture scheme is proving very successful ,but still see darn good stuff thrown up the dump (or worse ,by the side of the road ).

Oh ,the boxes are free ,just have to give your name and address in a little book to get one, I share my two with my neighbour so we have three between us ,that way we put plastic in one box ,paper in another and cans in the last one .I know they just mix it all up when it is being collected ,but at least my halo is nice and shiney. Rolling Eyes .

Also do a fortnightly 'dump run 'for anyone living near us (mostly all elderly) we seperate the stuff at the dump.

Any ideas how I can recycle the OH ?? he just won't stay put in the compost heap .....mind you ,it would take years for him to rot down as he used to like a beer so I reckon he is pickled so much that he is like a preserved egyptian mummy Laughing Laughing
