Dover remembers

BACK on the other side of the English Channel, Dover is preparing to commemorate the seafarers and Royal Marines who sailed from the port 89 years ago to keep the channel clear of enemy submarines.

Civic leaders, current and ex-service organisations and ordinary men and women will be remembering the heroes of the Zeebrugge Raid who, on St George’s Day 1918, bottled up German submarines at the Belgian port by sinking blockships.

It was accepted by the raiders, all volunteers, that it was a suicide mission. In an hour-long firefight 635 were killed, wounded or reported missing as the blockships were put in position.

Scores of bravery decorations were awarded including eight Victoria Crosses, 21 Distinguished Service Orders and 29 Distinguished Service Crosses. Many of those who died, and whose bodies were brought home to Dover, are buried at the town’s St James’ Cemetery where the ceremonies will be held on April 23.

As a result of the raid, the German submarines and surface craft in the Belgian canal system were unable to attack channel shipping carrying reinforcements to the Western Front at a time when the German army was threatening a massive breakthrough.

Isn't it about time a better way was sought for people to balance their views than by killing?

We are not putting anything right by our encroachment into other nation states.

Unless Mr Brown can give a convincing argument ( which even the great Bliar failed to do) why we should protect the production of the insidious Poppy and support the US in it's search for energy, whilst I understand their are no moral issues left in this world, why let our sons die for an unsupportable idea?

I have ,and will always have the greatest repect for 'Our Boys' but feel the powers that be have really let them down .What with sending them where we do not need to be ,failing to equip them properly ,failing them when they return home ,failing those that are injured ,failing the families who try to understand why thier sons /daughters died and most of all ,failing to forsee what we all knew in the first place.

Are they fighting to give those suppressed people rights ,don't really think so .When it all gets to the point it's oil and drugs at the bottom of this.

Quite a long time ago ,I was given a song by a group called The Levellers it's called Another Mans Cause .If any of you ever listen to it ,you will see the same thoughts apply today many years after it was released.

We have the Bravest soldiers ,who should have a day each year to commemorate their courage and we should do more to help those who have fought for the country ,even though they do not believe in the war they are fighting.Many are not coping with the after effects and end up on the streets /institutions and the families who try to cope with such devastating personality changes in their loved ones do not get the support they need..

Yes ,I am very anti Iraq /Afghanistan but support Our Boys in their Bravery and Fortitude.

If the U.S want to go and fight for greed ,let them do it alone .We are not the U.S and never want to be.

except if you are making millions out of private forces overseas,
making millions out keeping the troops fed and watered overseas,
and making millions out of the bubling black stuff underground, underneath all those troops overseas, underneath all those poppies, and the ideaoligy of what the red poppy represents for those that perished overseas....

What real reason do our children go overseas, to protect not only us, but the local to them residents overseas,
greed is one answer, profit is another, then we have sence of duty as another.
but i dont know in what order our leaders put them....

One has to ask why worry about the 400kg of Heroin when we are protecting the growth of tons of the stuff elsewhere but as you say Lin the unthinkable may have some substance, after all who owns/controls what goes on in this world?

Our Royals sweet figureheads though they seem are very influential, after all who could influence them?

Our great leader, Brown, if in doubt, could make great strides if he arranged the purchase of those grim fields of poppies for the production of medical related substances, of which there is a world shortage.

So yes, royals get a boost, navy gets a boost and the price of those fields in Afghanistan get a boost.

In other words the drugs trade is by dollar terms many times greater than even the lucrative arms trade and some think a princess died for her opposition to the arms trade/ mines.
