teen pregnancies are worrying...............Teen pregnancy rates Tendring are amoung the highest in Essex.
Only Basildon and Harlow are worse.
The figures have been highlighted by the local conservative group who claim
young people here are being failed.
OK, so if teen pregnancies are worse in both Basildon and Harlow, and both areas have been granted £500 million regeneration budgets.........

teen pregnancysHardly suprising really as sex education is now taught in primary schools at the age of 10-11 years old as opposed to secondary schools at the age of 13-14 years old. If you didnt know that bars of chocolate existed would you want to try one! no so when you are told you are naturally curious. Let children be children and protect and nurture them, they have plenty of time to be an adult.

I wish 'sex education' was seen to be so by youngsters, recently asked young members of my family what they thought of such lessons at school, their reply almost to a man was derisory.
Education is the answer but good quality is better than quantity.
The schools in question were of this area.

My ten year olds response to his Sex Education talk last week at school was quite simple .....He is glad he is not a girl !!!.
When asked what he learnt his response was "not a lot"
It's about time we started teaching boys that it is THEIR responsibility as well as the girls.We allow the fathers of these innocent (and the offspring are the innocent party in this)children to get off scott free.It seems to be a vicious circle as these children grow up to believe it's ok to cut and run like their fathers did....someone will always pick up the peices and it probably won't be them.
I for one will not be embarrassed to put a condom in my boys pocket when he reaches sexual maturity and I will make sure he will have the knowledge to use it.Though I realise that this is not 100% fail safe ,I hope he will be sensible.

Quite agree Lin, and boys should be taught they don't have to do 'it' to prove anything to anyone. Before the discussion on physical sex young people should be helped to understand emotions (... that love equates to more than a physical act.)
Arguably in our society boys mature quicker mentally but slower physically than girls. This is often said to put boys under tremendous pressure to show they have got what it takes.
Psychological studies suggest that slowly maturing boys are at disadvantage whilst at school. It was found that female teacher's are less tolerant of immature boys unwittingly putting down the slow developer. This type of disadvantage can remain throughout the boys life.
Girls on the other hand lose out by early maturation, as they are more likely to experience early motherhood. Causing a cycle of deprivation.
The problem is two fold. Untrained mature boys are naturally trying to prove their manhood whilst controlling their testosterone. This makes cohesion in the classroom between the mature boys and the immature boys confrontational and leaves the mature girls in a exposed position. This is were education plays a vital role in helping children understand emotions, relationships and consequences.
It is naive to ask for abstinence from the impressionable young, but through education show them how it is in their best self interest to understand the nature of their physiological and psychological development making their transition from childhood to adulthood more understandable.

Ever thought of being a teacher ??
It is a shame that they have to grow up so fast though.The pressure put on todays children to grow up quickly and experience everything now is far too great .At ten years old they are already mini adults without the thought processes of consequencies and actions.
I watched my 10 year old go off to the school disco recently and although a good time was had by all ,some of the clothing that the girls were wearing was ,frankly,scandalous.
I just wish they were allowed to be what they are ,children.Not mini adults.
Mind ,the lad did make me laugh when he told me all girls were after is whats in your pocket (money) and whats in your trousers.Hopefully he will be far more interested in getting rich than scoring.
I am unsure if they teach them further SE at secondary school as it's been so long since I had a teenager in the house.Perhaps the powers that be should dig out some rather awful pictures of what sexual diseases do to the body and frighten the life out of them.

For the pictures to work the young people have to have the maturity to understand the implications of the diseases - still comes back to emotional education first!
