Yesterday, 3 of us had to go to Lowestoft for a family funeral...
So i chose to use my sons diesel mondeo estate...old but good vehicle.
It was warm, comfortable and as eco friendly as i can be in travelling roughly 180 miles there and back..
To use my petrol consuming monster of a car would have had more comfort, but as it has a HUGE engine, it was left at home.
We arrived in so much time, a quick stop at a Morrisons store gave us the opportunity to taste its all in breakfast........very nice..
Then onto the purpose of the visit..
Back to the house for a chat, cup of tea and a sandwich...
By now it was just gone 5pm, oh dear rush hour traffic..
Wise old men always let much younger daughters drive home, as older tired from standing men can then sit in the front seat and nod off to sleep..
stop start--stop start--stop start in the town traffic..
then onto the A12 --- now we are motoring....
as we get near to the Mistley and Manningtree turn off the traffic stops.
Oh no the A12 is blocked between junctions further down, so we all try to get on an escape route back to Clacton for us.
3 HOURS TO TRAVEL JUST 1 MILE
No information as to what was happening on either road...what do you do.
i phoned the kids at mine and theirs for help....
in the end i was given a police help line number in chelmsford, but never got to use it.
the AA and RAC internet sites just dumbly said Accident on A12 ..
i NEEDED a toilet....
so we turned round and went back onto the A12, took left sliplane now heading for "accident on A12" freedom and Colchester......
We did see a broken down lorry in the fast lane coned off..
we did see workers putting out miles of cones for night working repairs after 10pm...

we did get all the way home no more problems.........

BUT WHY............WHY WAS WE HERDED INTO A SMALL COUNTRY LANE.
a lane that it was impossable to fit 2 fast moving lanes of traffic into one lane small village road that was going nowhere..

But worst of all, the total lack of information from our super highway information network, the internet........

2 bean cans and a pice of string would have been better....

the cost of letting your car ticking over in traffic for 3 hours, the 180 miles of mixed driving, just £20 in diesel
the stress factor of being treated like an idiot and shoved aside
£££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££`s

Ah! This reminds me of the term I use - invisible roadworks.
It's the same where-ever you are but this is what happened to me a week last Monday on the M4.
Between Bristol and Swindon the traffic came to an almost halt and was creeping forward very, very slowly. All three lanes.
Eventually we saw signs at the roadside saying "road works in 800 yards", then the usual countdown and the apperance of the dreaded cones blocking one lane.
Suddenly the traffic speeded up and we were clear BUT THERE WAS NO ROADWORKS.This all took an hour.
This has happened to me before, down in Kent this time.

Why? All I can imagine is that roadworks were due to start and the road was being
coned off etc etc in readiness.
But is it really necessary to do so?

Well Ivan, if it is any consolation to you, I was sitting in that jam with you, took over 3 hours to get from the A14 slip road onto the A137 and to Tattingstone where we were diverted via E. Bergholt back to the A12 which had been re-opened by then.

Sadly, as Amenity stated there was a serious accident in which a motorcylist died and therefore the A12 was completely closed for many hours London bound, all traffic heading towards Colchester and London from A14 and Ipswich was diverted onto the A12.

All the poor souls in their cars who had already gone by the E.Bergholt at Tattingstone had to continue to sit in that jam to Manningtree for many more hours.

My sympathy goes out to the family of the man who died and unfortunately we are seeing more and more of these incidents on the A12.

What it does highlight is how poor our road infrastructure in this area is and also the obvious lack of planning within the traffic and police depts in terms of handling these situations.

The accident happened around 14:30 and the road was closed from then until after 20:00 but some people have reported seeing the the body of the poor man who dies, still lying on the road at 17:00 which I find absolutely appaling.

We seem to have a real problem with being able to investigate a road accident scene within a sensible time frame, is it because the cannot get the necessary experts there quickly enough or what - I really do not know.
