From the Gazette.  TDC gave approval for houses to be built on Barnards site costing jobs and refused this guy costing jobs.  Someone does not like this peninsula?

Dovercourt, Colchester: End of line for ‘the Vac’

From the archive, first published Wednesday 2nd Apr 2008.

A manufacturing business which has been in Dovercourt for more than half a century is finally leaving the town.

AEW Delford Systems, which has been based in Dovercourt since 1953 and employs about 100 people, is this week moving to Severalls Business Park, Colchester.

In August 2006 the firm announced it was to leave the town but was not sure where it would go to.

Bosses said the move is to generate more cash for the company but locals - who still know the factory as "the Vac" - have said the move serves another blow to the town's trade.

David Ashmore, Delford's managing director, said: "For the last 15 years we have been looking at various options to redevelop the site, two or three times.

"We put forward a proposal for a commercial premises and to build a new factory on the back of it, to generate funding for the factory.

"We also asked if we could develop part of the land for housing and it was turned down.

"There are no options to generate funding for a new premises in Dovercourt so we have moved to Colchester."

Mr Ashmore said that 110 people were employed at the Dovercourt site.

He said 60 of those living in that area were all offered jobs in Colchester and six chose not to to change sites.

He confirmed the move meant "a number" of jobs would be created in Colchester but was not willing to disclose how many.

The factory, which prints weight guidance labels for food, has been moving its contents to its new home in Wyncolls Road.

The firm was first known as Vacuumatic, which dates back to the 1940s, before changing its name a number of times over the years.
