Does everyone know the fast service to The Hook is to be stopped after christmas?

End of an era that. I can't remember a time when I didn't see ads for Harwich to The Hook.

The slow boat is still going to take cargo and I suppose it will take a few private cars too. But not sure about foot passengers.

This is not a rumour. It is fact. My friend has been given notice as the service is defintely discontinued. It's a date in January, but I can't remember if it is beginning or end of the month.

I know that at Gt Yarmouth they are expanding the ferry port and there was talk of a service from there to Amsterdam. I don't know if that is up and running yet, but it looks to me like that is where the Harwich one will have gone to.

More job losses locally. But actually my friend is Dutch and his employment contract is Dutch too, alhtough he lives in Harwich and spends his money locally too.

Thin end of the wedge maybe?
How long before the rest of the DFDS passenger services follow? They already cut back on their services. Don't they go to Denmark from Newcastle now?

The Swedish route went up there a few years back.

I suppose they can't compete with cheap air fares?

I've been thinking about this and I do remember it being on the news a while back.

I am sure they said it was to do with the cheap air flights.

Although i never used the fast cat, i used one like it on the Weymouth to Jersey run a "few" times... If my memory serves me right, was the ferry upsetting many people when it first came to harwich, having problems creating massive wash when in use ?....I wondered if with the new Bathside Bay Development about to come into fruition soon, was these things a contributor to the cats demise........

There's a big spread on p3 of the Evening Gazette tonight and the centre pages of the Harwich Standard on Friday, all about the Discovery's final journey. Enjoy!

Did you write the story John?

I always fancied going on the HSS, obvoiusly too late now. But despite coming from a long line of sailors I have absolutely no sea legs. A little bit of movement and I go a nice shade of green. Even happened on a ferry that was just turning round in the river.

I did write it yes, really enjoyed doing it as well, although the subject matter was obviously sad.

The HSS was good fun, I went on twice. You should try out the new ferries from May, they're going to be quite luxurious and may even be ok for those of you who don't like being out at sea!

We've gone slightly off-topic here! Very Happy

I'm sure no-one would want to have me staring at them every day of the year, so maybe a calendar's not the best idea...!
