CENTRAL SQUARE, BROOKLANDS GARDENS COMMUNITY GARDEN

The site is of the central area in Brooklands Gardens.

The area immediately behind the community centre in the foreground has now been developed and is a multi-use sports area.

Both this and the community centre are on land owned by EEDA leased to Tendring District Council.

The area known as the “club” (the building was demolished some time ago) is also in EEDA’s ownership and proposals to create a central community square and garden has been put forward by a number of community organisations.

EEDA have indicated they are willing to provide the land for ‘nil cost’ for this project.

"Central Square"
The proposed green space/ community garden that would form the central square, is to the rear of the multi-use sports area.

This site is the heart of Brooklands and is easily accessible by foot from anywhere in the core regeneration area.

It is currently affected by fly-tipping; vandalism and trespassing.

The site is approximately 3-4 acres in total but it includes an electricity sub-station as well as public right of way along its southern boundary. The open space is bordered by Brooklands Gardens East (adopted highway); Brooklands Garden West (non-adopted) and residential properties are in the background in front of Brooklands Gardens Link Road (also non-adopted).

Works to create a new landscaped open space is proposed using materials and design principles in keeping with the coastal location.

The area will be made accessible to the public and new pavement verges will be created to blend with the existing materials.

Current progress: Development of design brief and landscape design.
